Its a rare and precious thing for someone to open their heart and share with simplicity and integrity, a living encapsulation of personal experience, gained through interactions with "Someone who has been mastered by Zen". The sweetness of the artwork totally enthralled me, and I loved the layout and design of this book, especially the starry table of contents. Wisdom and warm fuzzles abound here. Had The Little Prince sought a princess, he'd probably choose American Zen - the glowing heart-felt material really just oodles off of the page and into the reader. As I read this baseball-of-a-book (page 50 and back-cover) sincerity support and humility gently flowed forth, page after page. I was delighted by the inspiration, practicality, and the stunning beauty. Each titled page was a memorable encounter and now I wonder if American Zen is emblematic of something new in the annals of practice, calm, and quiet love. The cover is resplendent with Bodhidharma and his iPod, and the bold and happy pages within are chock full of sparkles for the reader to noodle with and absorb, courtesy of Zenji, and the realms of Old and American Zen.Product details

What a lovely book. Y. Ohta has captured the essence of Zen in this collection of short summaries of profound Zen teachings, illustrated with gorgeous Japanese calligraphic art. As you read the book, you are swept into Zen mind -- very clear and terse, with a sense of humor and infinite possibility. I really loved this book and would recommend it to anyone who wants to not only understand but experience the Zen path to higher awareness and enlightenment.
This book is uplifting and full of wisdom. I highly recommend it.
Great book with short yet deep passages that exuded great wisdom. Love the illustrations as well, that we're seemingly created in the style similar to illustrations in the Little Prince.
Never really understood most zen koans, but these lovely zen koans opened my mind! Absolutely high teachings filled with love and light!
